10 years of the Global Innovation Forum

Graphic Recordings hastily plastered on a window at GIF 2013

Next week Live Illustration will be supporting the Global Innovation Forum in London from the 15th - 16th November. It’s become a highlight in our calendar and it is the tenth glorious year of our involvement! It’s almost like a family get together.

Back in 2013 Max got in touch with me - Chris Shipton author of these blog posts - and enquired about drawings at his event.

I would say that I was in the ‘making it up as you go along’ phase of my scribing career at that point. Of course I would still list that as a key skill in this game. I turned up and managed to draw nearly every talk across two days of conference on big bits of paper. In a slightly haphazard crazy way as was my approach back then.

It was totally exhausting, and ten years later so much drawing has been done I think things have improved. Technique has developed, the working practices are more sensible and now for the first time we will go digital at GiF 2023 drawing entirely on iPads.

Back in 2013 Max and I did not think about digitising the artwork. The process whereby we photograph the drawings and turn them into digital takeaways. But now, in 2023, I have found an ancient SDHC card in a drawer and dug out the images from then. And here, at last, is a small gallery of work from GIF 2013.

A final word - people often ask me ‘is this actually your job?’ to which I reply ‘believe it or not yes it is’. Then they ask ‘how long have you been doing this?’ and it would appear… more than ten years!
