Hotel Breakfasts

A four panel cartoon detailing English Breakfast as well as curry and continental

We live in an uncertain world but there is one immutable law - that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. At Live Illustration we find ourselves travelling the UK, Europe and the world to bring our drawing skills to meetings and events. And that involves staying in lots of different hotels, and experiencing their various breakfasts.

Sometimes the additional cost of the breakfast is so egregious that it’s better to go next door to the considerably cheaper cafe as a point of principle. Sometimes you are trapped in a middle eastern glittering palace and end up being tempted by the breakfast curry. Either way, its better to have it than not.

As a scribe you are in the role of drawing a meeting, creating an engaging bit of work for attendees and crucially helping the people running it make it a good one. It’s actually a big all day effort. A keynote speaker may bound on stage and do their bit for 45 minutes or an hour, and the good ones are really good, but when you’re drawing you can find yourself ‘on’ all day. Even the MC gets a break during talks.

Yet so much of bringing events to life with drawing is theatre! The drawing is a performance as much as anything else.

And thats why breakfast choice is so important. OK the four images in this post are NOT what you want. In reality you want a big bowl of porridge. Slow burn energy release of oats plus FRUIT if you can bring yourself to it. Also pocket as many nuts as you can for later. Another top tip is there is clearly an international conspiracy of hotel owners to provide tiny glasses for the orange juice. So its perfectly fine to neck half a dozen shots of juice at the stand before going to the table with your minuscule vessel of vitamin c. Coffee is of such critical importance it has its own post.
